Bulawayo residents woke up in fear on Monday morning after government deployed ZRP support unit to quell a demonstration that had been called for by the main opposition party, MDC Alliance.
MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa, announced recently that his party was organizing a series of demonstrations targeting Zimbabwe’s main cities starting with Harare on the 16th of August and 19th in Bulawayo. However, the Harare demo did not proceed well as the demonstrators were flogged by the police after ZRP had banned the demonstration.
The Bulawayo demonstration was banned by the police which siting six reasons for the ban. One of the reason cited by the police is that the ordinary Zimbabwean citizens are already experiencing hardships so any call for demonstration might be taken advantage of by the already agitated citizens and violence may erupt.
The ZRP Riot members were all over the City of Kings ready to crash any form of gathering which might result in violence. Following the heavy presence of police, the demo did not go as planned and protesters were scattered around in fear of being flogged and teargassed.
The central business district was completely deserted as most people stayed home fearing for their dear lives. Most major shops and businesses did not open fearing the worst after the police banned the demonstrations.
The police flooded the CBD and cordoned off Tredgold, the High Court and City Hall carpark.
